Metroscan Utility Locating Ltd adheres to the UK standard of PAS 128 for the accurate location of underground services. Currently, there is no equivalent standard in Ireland for underground utility locating and mapping. The PAS 128 framework includes four categories that can be applied to surveys: Categories D, C, B, and A. This standard helps clients determine the appropriate level of survey required for their proposed projects, and Metroscan is ready to advise on the best method to meet their needs.
Utility Surveying Standards – PAS128
Category D: This is the most basic level of utility mapping, which involves compiling utility records from service providers. Utility records can be gathered from Gas Networks Ireland, ESB, Irish Water, and other service providers, offering a rough indication of what services may be present in your proposed work zone.
Category C: This category builds on Category D by including a site visit to verify the presence of services. A visual inspection of gas meters, hydrants, valves, manholes, and chambers helps confirm the services in the area.
Category B: The most commonly used standard in Ireland, Category B combines the elements of Categories D and C with non-destructive geophysical methods (such as Electromagnetic Locating Devices and GPR) to determine the horizontal and vertical positions of underground services.
Category A: The most comprehensive level, Category A incorporates all previous categories and includes a visual inspection of the underground services. This can be achieved through vacuum excavation or hand-dug trial pits.
With Metroscan, you can trust that we will guide you in selecting the most suitable survey method based on your specific project requirements.
